2018-2019 Umpire Academy Advisory Board Members:
Deb Goldpenny (Buffalo, NY)
Ms. Goldpenny has officiated fastpitch softball for almost three decades and served as an umpire for THE Spring Games for several years. Her strength is mentorship and providing feedback to young umpires and is known as “raising the bar” for the profession. She has officiated college softball at the highest levels including the DIII National Championship Regional Tournament in 2012.
Bill Gomoluch (Toledo, OH)
Mr. Gomoluch has served as the assignor for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) and the Umpire in Chief for the 2017 and 2018 NAIA Women’s Softball World Series. In addition to his leadership responsibilities (which include identifying championship level officials for collegiate championships), Mr. Gomoluch has served as a Regional umpire for the NCAA Division I Regional Championships.
Kevin Haun (Portage, MI)
Mr. Haun has been an umpire for over four decades and a collegiate umpire for more than thirty years. His experience at all levels of softball makes him an invaluable member of the PFX Umpire Academy.
Mr. Hill has served as the assignor for the National ProFastpitch League, the Big East, Horizon League, College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin, Northern Atlantic Conference, Great Midwest, University Athletic Association, and Great Lakes Valley Conferences. He has also individually assigned for Washington University and the Rebel Spring Games. In his capacity as an assignor, Mr. Hill has hired, assigned, trained, and evaluated thousands of umpires over the last decade. As an umpire, Mr. Hill has officiated the NCAA Division III World Series, eight NCAA post-season Regionals (DII and DIII), seven World Cup Events and World University Games, three NSA World Series, and three AFA World Series.
Tess Layman (Mason, MI)
Ms. Layman is a regular on the collegiate softball scene and also acts as assignor for youth softball programs in her home town. She has officiated for top Florida DI programs including the University of Central Florida (UCF) and the University of South Florida (USF). She was also selected to officiate the USA Softball 18U Gold National Championship games in 2017. As a Gold Level USA Softball Umpire Awards recipient, Ms. Layman is recognized by our National Governing Body as the best trained and proficient in the sport of fastpitch softball.
Tracey Olsen-Oliver (Orlando, FL)
Ms. Oliver is an educator in Central Florida and has served as an umpire for over a decade. She has officiated college softball at all levels as well as youth programs across the nation. Known as a work-horse, Ms. Oliver officiated almost 200 college softball games from 2016-2017. Ms. Olsen-Oliver has been instrumental in the development of the PFX Umpire Academy and supporting young umpires in Central Florida.
Lisa Pierce (Orlando, FL)
Ms. Pierce serves as Treasurer on the Board of the Florida Professional Officials Association, the Florida District 3 USA Softball umpire assigning organization. In her leadership role on the FPOA, Ms. Pierce is instrumental in promoting the education, leadership, and training of Central Florida softball umpires in order to foster, develop, and refine the skills of those officials. Ms. Pierce has been a driving force for this Academy since its inception.
Keith Poirier (Stoughton, WI)
A National Pro Fastpitch umpire, Mr. Poirier has officiated softball at all levels.
Jeff Polston (Inverness, FL)
An active umpire at all collegiate levels (including over 60 college softball games at the Division I level from 2016-2017). Recognized for his knowledge of the NCAA rulebook, Mr. Polston is an invaluable resource to the Umpire Academy.
Phil Sowders (Fairborn, OH)
A well-known collegiate softball umpire with almost three decades of experience at the highest levels, Mr. Sowders is a leader at the USA Softball level and has officiated USA Softball National Championship events throughout his career.
Marci Tawney (Grand Rapids, MI)
Ms. Tawney is an up-and-coming collegiate umpire and was one of the most popular umpires during the 2018 THE Spring Games event. In addition to serving as a Trustee for the West Michigan Umpire Association, Ms. Tawney has experience officiating collegiate softball at DII, DIII, NAIA, and JUCO levels. Ms. Tawney is a regular at the USA Softball youth championship events.
Steve Vail (Orlando, FL)
A former coach at University of Wisconsin-River Falls, Mr. Vail understands the relationship between the coach and the umpire. As a college softball umpire, Mr. Vail has officiated college softball games at all levels. He also serves as a collegiate softball assignor for the Division I level.
As a former USA Softball All-American fastpitch softball player and collegiate softball coach, Mr. Vail knows what it takes to succeed at the highest levels. He currently officiates college softball games at all levels and is often called for top competitions.
