USSSA Legends of the Clay Champions- TEAM PFX 18U

The weekend of Nov. 10th and 11th, TEAM PFX 18U softball team won the HS Division USSSA Legends of the Clay Championship on their home turf, Legends Way Ballfields. The team went 5-0 on the weekend, and sealed the championship deal knocking off Hatters Gold in the Championship with a 5-4 victory!

The Florida College Prep Team brought the bats this weekend, scoring 30 runs over the course of the weekend. The offense was lead by 2019 utility player Bailey Fernandez who hit a career high .666, along with 2020 catcher/outfielder Jasmeen Rivera who batted .400 over the weekend.

In the first game of the tournament, TEAM PFX jumped out with a 4-0 lead, and that was all pitcher Heather Franson needed. The 2017 senior went the distance shutting down the Osceola Mustangs in the circle allowing 0 runs while striking out 6 in 5 innings of play.

The bats didn’t stop there in Game 2 when TEAM PFX scored 5 runs in the first inning vs the Citrus Mud Dawgs. Sarah Barefoot, who will graduate from Lake Minneola HS in 2019, led the Athletics at the plate going 3-3, and also picked up the win in the circle!

Game 3 of pool play would be the toughest battle for the Athletics as they took on cross town softball foe, Wagners Gold. TEAM PFX edged out the victory with a score of 3-1, scoring all 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning! Franson picked up her 2nd win of the day in the circle, striking out 5.

Coming out of pool play, TEAM PFX earned the Number 1 seed, and would rematch Wagners Gold in the semi-finals. Barefoot did her job again on the mound, allowing 0 runs with 5 strikeouts, while the bats continued to stay hot to seal the 5-0 victory.

TEAM PFX would face a very talented Hatters Gold in the Championship Game, that drew a large crowd from the Clermont community to support their local softball team. Barefoot got the start in the circle, holding the big hitting Hatters Gold to 3 runs while striking out 4. The Athletics scored one run in each inning, giving them a 5-3 lead heading into the final inning. Franson entered the game as the closer, and what a dramatic finish it was! With 2 outs, and runners on 1st and 2nd, Hatters Gold hit a single to left field, and 2017 graduate Sophia Negron fired a throw to 3rd base to throw out the runner advancing from 1st to 3rd base to give PFX the 5-4 victory!

TEAM PFX will play in the USSSA Future Stars tournament in Jacksonville on Dec 3-4th as they begin to close out the fall season.
